Charts of the month (November)

Data visualizations that rip

Hey there,

Black Friday is a strange holiday in the U.S. that at least attempts to take consumer capitalism to its logical extreme.

In the spirit of the extreme, instead of encouraging physical consumption, I took our 10th 'Charts of the Month' to the extreme by curating more than 70 charts for it.

The first five are free for all today—the rest are for plus supporters only.

For those of you who are new and curious about what this is, it's an end-of-month roundup of my favorite data visualizations from all the places I do research.

Vroom vroom

“Much ado about nothing” is how I would describe concerns about slowing EV sales at the global level. Whether you look at September, October (below), or annual data from 2024, the EV sales growth trend is strong.

That said, the vast majority of this is driven by China. The Chinese train isn’t stopping any time soon:

As a result, Chinese companies are poised to eat many other auto manufacturers’ lunches. While Tesla may still hold its own, BYD (China) is catching up to other global auto manufacturers at an astonishing rate in terms of sales, all while only selling cars (and buses) with a plug:

Chinese companies like BYD are making all this progress even while lacking access to many markets, like the U.S., where tariffs constrain sales from Chinese brands (the U.S. and Canada have 100% tariffs on Chinese car imports). Despite that being true in many markets, China recently became the world’s largest auto exporter.
